Succeeding to Believe
My name is Nathan Kerns. I was born and raised in Ironton, Ohio. I am a devout Christian, and thank God for the wonderful opportunity He has given me. I started playing golf when I was 3 years old, and developed a passion for the game. I grew up wanting to play the game just like my dad. At my grandfather's house, we cut out an area as our green, and I would spend hours going back and forth hitting shots. When I wasn't at his house, I would go out in my front yard, and my neighbor's yards, and hit plastic golf balls all day long. I was out there so much, I even "designed" my own golf course. Everyday after school, I would put my bookbag down, grab my clubs, and head outside.
I entered my first competitve tournament at the age of 11. I remember being nervous, but never felt pressure from my parents. They never put pressure on me to succeed, but rather got enjoyment out of watching me do something that I loved. I won my first tournament when I was 12, and was fortunate enough to continue my journey into high school golf. In high school, I developed a unique golf swing. It was not pretty, or rhythmical, but it seemed to work for me. I had always dreamed about playing Division 1 college golf, but between my junior and senior year, it became more realistic to me. My game started improving because I was growing physically and mentally. Golf started to become special to me, and hold a special place in my heart. High school was not my final goal, and later that fall, I signed with Marshall University to make that goal a reality.
When I arrived at Marshall, my "unique" swing quickly became evident to my teammates. I had never taken advice from anyone but my dad. Throughout college, I was told to change this, and fix that. I just continued working hard, and believing in what got me this far. I had some good tournaments early in college, but between my junior and senior year, my life changed again. I won the 2012 Ohio Amateur, and that day, I realized that my swing was indeed "my swing". It worked for me and could compete on any level if it was on. Again, I always thought about being a professional golfer, but never truly believed it. It was in that summer that I realized I wanted to pursue that dream. I was fortunate enough to have a great senior year, and take my game to new heights. My belief in what I could do continued to grow and help me become successful. When I started believing that I could compete with anyone, I did.
From the little kid in his front yard, to the man who is trying to fulfill his life-long dream, this is me, and this is where I have come from. My passion is still burning for the game, and I believe in myself now more than ever. I am ready to start this journey, one "unique" swing at a time.
